Professional Background

Professor James Barlow has been Chair in Technology and Innovation Management (Healthcare) at Imperial College Business School since January 2003. Previous appointments include SPRU (Science & Technology Policy Research Unit, University of Sussex), the Policy Studies Institute, and the University of Westminster. He received his BA and PhD from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

From 2006 to 2013 James helped establish and was Principal Investigator of HaCIRIC (Health and Care Infrastructure Research and Innovation Centre). With the significant funding from the UK’s Engineering & Physical Science Research Council, HaCIRIC grew to become globally the largest research programme on healthcare infrastructure. Since October 2013, James has been Associate Director of Research and Evaluation for Imperial College Health Partners.James’ research and practice focuses on the structural and organisational challenges to the adoption of innovation in healthcare. Of particular interest is the relationship between innovation in healthcare technologies, services and the built infrastructure. He has also worked extensively on innovation in housing provision and other housing policy issues, including construction and supply chain innovation.James has led or been involved in many research and consulting projects around the world and has extensive experience advising government and industry in the UK and elsewhere.

He currently sits on the healthcare advisory board for MITIE Group plc and previously chaired the healthcare advisory board for Willmott Dixon Construction Ltd. He is an advisory board member of the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital Charity Strategy Committee, supporting major investment in local healthcare innovation projects, and an executive member of the Department of Health’s Policy Innovation Research Unit (PIRU).
