About Us

The International Academy for Design & Health is a leading global, interdisciplinary knowledge community dedicated to the stimulation and application of research concerning the interaction between design, health, science & culture.

Founded by Dr Alan Dilani at the Karolinska Institute, Medical University in Stockholm in 1997 after the successful outcome of the 1st World Congress in Trondheim in Norway, the aim of the IADH is to provide a highly visible global forum for promoting an ongoing international exchange of research findings among scientists, designers, health professionals, industry and Ministries of Health worldwide. We are passionate about health promotion by design and believe that the built environment should empower, support and sustain our health and wellbeing

By providing a highly visible global forum for an ongoing exchange of research findings among scientists, designers and industry, we work in close partnership with our international network of governments, universities and commercial organizations to promote human health.

Constitution

The IADH is a not-for-profit incorporated association, registered with the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) in the State of Queensland, Australia.  Our Constitution is based on the Model Rules provided by the OFT and is available to view here. 

By -Laws

The by-laws have been established to create consistency and transparency in our global operations through a consultative process and then submitted to the Executive Board for approval prior to being established. By law, audited accounts must be submitted by the organization and will be made public on our website after each Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Volunteer

All leadership positions including board & regional chapters are volunteer based, donating their time. All revenue paid by members or sponsors goes into funding operations of the academy only. No salaries or benefits, including travel are paid to board members and regional leadership.

Vision & Mission

To foster Salutogenic design to promote health and wellbeing by creating physical environments that support health promotion and thereby healthy societies.

  • To fuel our passion to drive improvement in the quality, safety and value of health and wellbeing through our physical environment;  
  • To develop and disseminate knowledge through the promotion of research and professional and clinical practices in the development of our physical environment to improve our health and wellbeing;
  • To promote and participate in the worldwide adoption of Salutogenic environments through the translation of research into practice;
  • To provide a forum for its constituent network to engage and thrive;
  • To provide a platform for education, training, research, advocacy, events, media and publishing activities that improve knowledge, shape thinking, and influence global practices in the design of physical environments.

Our Governance

Global Board

Consists of representatives from institutional, government, non-government organisations (NGOs), private and corporate organisations, industry partners and other areas of industry.

The Board is responsible for;

  • determining the global vision, purpose and strategic direction of the IADH
  • governing the organisational structure
  • initiating and coordinating global (non-regional) activities
  • organising the selection of the Executive Board members

Executive Committee

Consists of the Executive Board, plus the Directors of the Regional Chapters and the leader of the Future Leaders Committee.

The Executive Committee will:

  • inform other members of activities and development in the field of design and health
  • indicate trends and views on the future direction of the field
  • contribute research findings of relevance and benefit to the industry
  • network among member universities and industry
  • provide relevant information on research and events from their own region.

Chapter Leadership Committee

Chapter leaders support our global leadership team. Collectively, we will work together to further the vision of IADH. Leadership Committee will also work independently to address issues and provide services that are relevant in each region. As a member of a regional chapter committee, you will help to shape the goals, structure and activities of the chapter, build its network, and work with the global team on the broader journey of the Academy.

Members

The academy is a global knowledge community dedicated to developing and sharing research findings concerning the interaction between architecture, science, technology and culture in the promotion of human health, wellbeing and quality of life.  Members share in the knowledge and understanding of healthy built environments and network with global leaders in the field.

Advisory Industry Board

The role of the advisory board is to provide industry experience and guidance for the academy constituents. This collaboration will lead to having a better understanding of the objectives of the academy and working together to achieve the results.

This is in recognition of the vast research and achievements that are being developed within industry to add value to the operations of the academy whilst maintaining integrity of the operations and commercial activity of the academy
